Forget what you know about illusionists: no cheesy
tuxedos, no rabbits to pull out of hats. Brock Gill leads a new
generation of edgy, daring illusionists, amazingaudiences with his
unique stage show, dry wit, and mind-blowing escapes. His traveling
show is one of the largest of any touring illusionist and is seen
by over 300,000 people each year.
It all started during his junior year at college
when he realized that illusions could be an ideal way to earn an
ear. "It didn't make any sense," Brock admits, "but I felt like
it's what I was called to do."
Brock quit his job at a local saw mill and began
performing at local events. News of his creative methods spread
through the area quickly and he began to receive invitations from
other groups almost immediately.
"I
finished my first show and had three other offers to do the same
thing," Brock explains. "I didn't have a business card or anything…
people just heard about it and wanted me to do the same for their
area. It was definitely confirmation."
Since those first events, Brock has traveled across
the United States and into Mexico, Israel and Australia. Understanding
that students in this MTV generation have short attention spans
and a need to be entertained visually, he has learned how to get
an audience's attention quickly and keep it.
It hasn't come without its share of challenges.
Equipment has been stolen (sound, lights, tricks, laptop, and trailer
to name a few), vehicles have burned to the ground (2000), the power
has gone out minutes before an event starts, and things break.
Through it all, Brock has developed an unforgettable
presentation about making the right decisions. Combining the art
of illusion and his personal story, Brock relays a truth that will
keep any audience spellbound.
